4Very Good Android Phone From LG.

By BTM

Update 11/21/11 **DO NOT UPDATE THE ANDROID OS**

Do not update the latest Android OS. It changes some things to "make the phone more battery efficient" but in fact the menus are less attractive, texting is more difficult, auto word fill in and corrections are screwed up and the battery actually drains faster. You can revert back to the older OS just follow your carriers instructions. High marks for Sprint for having them clearly explained on their site. Otherwise, I'm still loving this phone. It's very durable. Feels substantial and comfortable in my hand. The processor and memory work just fine. People complain but there are some things you can do that I suspect they don't do. Save stuff(photos, videos, contacts, apps, etc) to a high capacity micro SD card not internal memory. Also, download an app killer app so that you can check and stop apps that are running and hogging your processor and memory. Apps do not stop after you navigate away from them. Many keep running in the background. Other things that suck your battery and make your processor slower are active wallpaper, GPS satellite & privacy settings, bluetooth and background data & auto syncing. If those and other apps(Facebook for example) are running all the time then your phone may run slower and may lock up sometimes. 3G internet browsing works great on this phone. I have a 4G Motorola Droid RAZR for work and see just a little improvement on browsing. 4G sucks your battery dry by the way. Since this phone is free with a contract I consider it a great deal for casual users. It has wi-fi and can be a hotspot for other devices.

Original Review:

This has been a very good phone for me. I've had it for several months. Originally I was hesitant and didn't think I needed a smartphone but now I love it. I particularly love the voice action Google web search and the voice action navigation. Those work very well and are extremely handy. You can also use the voice action function for texting. That's a little ironic I know but it's proved to be very useful. Browsing the internet functions very well. It doesn't have the hardware to support in-browser flash video but I don't miss that and other videos(like Youtube) play fine. I have a computer for my primary internet browsing. I'm only browsing on this phone to look up info I need(movies, products, restaurants, directions) while I'm on the go. I love how I can view my local traffic cams. I was concerned about the processor speed but I haven't noticed any problems. Angry Birds can stutter some but that may be due to the advertising banner. I also like that it has five menus that I can use to organize my apps and functions. I have them organized as games, entertainment apps, primary functions, weather & apps, office apps and internet links.

What do I not like? The voice dialing doesn't work. At all. Hopefully there will be a fix. When texting I have alot of mistypes but I haven't yet bothered to download another keyboard. There are two keyboard versions available on the phone Android and Swype. I had an LG Dare before this phone and rarely had a mistype. The phone doesn't have a flash like the Dare. Though I notice with my wife's EVO the flash totally washes everything out anyway. I don't like the Sprint ID's. I think those are totally useless and prefer to organize my five menus with personal preference in mind(see above). Another minor issue is that the battery can drain quicker if you have alot of apps and GPS enabled. I find I'm frequently opening my task killer to stop apps. That's not a Optimus problem though it's more an Android apps thing I guess.

I was concerned b/c I heard this phone referred to as "entry level" and "budget minded" but now I think those terms are misleading. This phone is packed full of features and is extremely useful. I've dropped it on concrete several times and it still works fine. I also like that it's not too big to feel overly bulky. It fits very well in one hand and in it's case on my belt. Considering it's pretty much free with a contract I consider it a spectacular value.

2Good phone... already obsolete.

By mkbruin

Overall snappy, good build quality, and a good version of Android (2.2 now, rumored to jump to 2.3 soon); however, there is one MAJOR flaw to this phone that simply cannot be overlooked and needs to be advertised more.

The processor in this phone is only an ARM v6, and is already obsolete. Adobe Flash requires ARM v7. The brand-spankin' new Firefox 4 Mobile requires ARM v7. These are jsut two examples of crippled functionality resulting from the outdated processor. Now, assuming that you buy this with a renewed contract for 2 years, can you live with this reduced functionality for that time?

I can't. Which is why I am trading in my 3 month old Optimus S for either an Evo or an HTC Arrive.

If you are looking for an entry Android phone, and don't care about flash player, fierfox, etc... then this is a solid workhorse phone.

5Responsive, Vibrant, Durable. Simply Great.

By Trancend

Being my first smart phone, the fresh and unbiased impression to the 3G experience this phone gave me was one of absolute internet bliss. It wasn't until after I got used to this phone did I realize how drastic the experience can vary from phone to phone.

In short though, it feels very well constructed, looks vibrant/clear/crisp, responds lightning fast (to both clicks and swipes), and doesn't flake out and crash or anything.

I've had it for about a week and have installed a whole bunch of apps from the market, patched it, interfaced it to my computer, coustomized the heck out of it,

and it still runs just a fast and reliable as the day I purchased it.

I digg man... I diiiig :)
